Golf and Pickleball
Valley golf is built for the winter crowd: courses across the Upper and Mid-Valley run winter rates, leagues, and scrambles full of Winter Texans, and several resorts have courses on the property. Green fees run well under what the same round costs in the Sun Belt's bigger snowbird markets.
Pickleball took over the park circuit years ago. Most activity parks have courts and morning round-robins, and beginners are the norm, not the exception. If your park doesn't play, the next one over does.
Birding and the Outdoors
The Rio Grande Valley sits on one of the great migration funnels in North America, and the World Birding Center's nine sites string right through Winter Texan country: Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park by Mission, Estero Llano Grande by Weslaco, the Old Hidalgo Pumphouse, and on to South Padre. Santa Ana and Laguna Atascosa refuges add the big wild tracts.
You don't need to be a lister to enjoy it. Green jays, chachalacas, and altamira orioles show up at park feeders, and a morning walk at any refuge in January beats shoveling anything. Peak variety runs roughly November through March, which is exactly when you're here.
Common Questions
Should I bring my golf clubs down?
If you play at all, yes. Winter rates and weekday tee times are easy to come by, and park leagues make it simple to find a regular game. Rentals exist but a season of rentals costs more than hauling your bag.
When is birding best in the Valley?
The winter season itself: November through March brings the wintering species, and the Valley specialties like green jays and chachalacas are here year-round. Early morning at any World Birding Center site is the reliable play.
I've never played pickleball. Will I be out of place?
No. Park pickleball runs on open round-robins where new players rotate in, and most courts have a beginner hour. Show up with court shoes and someone will hand you a paddle.
