The Season in McAllen
Most McAllen-area parks sit north of the expressway, off Ware Road and North 10th, which puts you minutes from La Plaza Mall, H-E-B, and every big-box store the season requires. The McAllen Convention Center hosts Winter Texan events through January and February, and Quinta Mazatlán, a 1930s adobe mansion turned World Birding Center, is one of the easiest green jay sightings in the Valley.
Medical care is the quiet reason a lot of Winter Texans anchor here. McAllen Medical Center and Rio Grande Regional are both in town, and most specialists your doctor up north refers you to will have a McAllen address.
What to Know Before You Book
The honest trade-off: McAllen is the busiest city in the Valley, and 10th Street at 5 p.m. in February drives like a real city. Lot rents run higher than the Mid-Valley towns twenty minutes east. If you plan to be out at jam sessions and flea markets more than you're home, Alamo or Donna gets you the same Valley for less, with McAllen still a short drive away.
McAllen Miller International Airport (MFE) has direct flights that make it easy for the kids and grandkids to visit, which is worth weighing if Harlingen's airport was your other option.
