The Season in Brownsville

Brownsville gives you the most history per mile in the Valley. Palo Alto Battlefield, where the Mexican-American War opened in 1846, is a National Historical Park on the north side of town. Downtown's Mitte Cultural District and the Gladys Porter Zoo fill the days visitors come, and Resaca de la Palma State Park, the largest World Birding Center site, is old ranchland gone back to thorn forest.

Charro Days in late February is the event of the season: a two-nation fiesta Brownsville has thrown with Matamoros since 1938. And when a Starship is stacked at Boca Chica, half the Valley drives out Highway 4 to watch. You're twenty-five minutes from the launch pad.

What to Know Before You Book

Brownsville has fewer dedicated Winter Texan resorts than the Upper Valley. The parks here are smaller and quieter, and the big park-circuit social calendar mostly lives an hour west. It's also the longest drive to anything in the Upper Valley. Winter Texans who pick Brownsville tend to be the ones who want the beach twenty-five minutes away and a real city's worth of history, not a shuffleboard league.
