Falcon Heights, Texas
Falcon Heights is the little community at Falcon State Park, where Falcon Lake's bass water meets some of the best desert birding in Texas. This is the remote end of the Valley, and proudly so.
The Season at Falcon Lake
People winter at Falcon for two reasons: the fishing and the quiet. Falcon Lake is a legitimate big-bass reservoir whose largemouth fishing draws tournament anglers from both sides of the border, and the state park's winter campground fills with returning rigs that treat it like a park community, potlucks included. Full-hookup sites at state park rates are a fraction of resort rent downriver.
The birding is different here than the rest of the Valley. This is brush country on the edge of the Chihuahuan desert, with pyrrhuloxias, scaled quail, and roadrunners in the campground itself. Roma's historic bluff-top plaza, fifteen minutes east, is worth an afternoon.
What to Know Before You Book
Falcon Heights is genuinely remote, and you should plan like it. Groceries beyond a convenience store mean Roma or Rio Grande City, and a serious shopping run or a hospital means Rio Grande City or the McAllen area, an hour and a half out. Cell coverage is fair, not great. If that list reads like a warning, winter somewhere else; if it reads like the point, this is your spot.
