Laguna Heights, Texas
Laguna Heights is the small community between Port Isabel and the Rio Grande, minutes from the causeway to South Padre Island and, these days, close enough to hear about the SpaceX road closures out toward Boca Chica.
The Season in Laguna Heights
The town sits on the edge of the Bahia Grande, the tidal basin Fish and Wildlife reflooded in the early 2000s in one of the largest wetland restoration projects in the country, and the birding on those flats rivals anything at Laguna Atascosa a few miles north. Redfish and trout water is close too: boat ramps on the Laguna Madre put you fishing within minutes instead of driving to Port Isabel first.
Port Isabel's lighthouse, shrimp docks, and restaurants are five minutes away, and the causeway onto South Padre Island is just past that, so Laguna Heights works as a quieter, cheaper base for the same coastal season the island and Port Isabel sell at a markup.
What to Know Before You Book
The honest caveat here is a new one, not a historical one: SpaceX testing and launches out at Boca Chica close Highway 4 on short notice, sometimes for hours, and Laguna Heights sits close enough to the action to feel it even though the road itself doesn't run through town. Beyond that, Laguna Heights has no real town center of its own, so groceries, a hospital, or a hardware store mean Port Isabel or the twenty-minute drive on to Harlingen.
