Los Fresnos, Texas

Laguna Atascosa is the headline: 97,000 acres of coastal prairie and thornscrub that hold tens of thousands of redhead ducks in winter, aplomado falcons over the flats, and the last wild ocelots in the United States. The refuge entrance is about twenty minutes east of town, and serious birders plan whole seasons around it. Little Graceland on Highway 100 is the other stop, an Army veteran's lifelong Elvis collection turned museum, with a festival around the King's January birthday.

The town works as a base because of what surrounds it: South Padre Island's beach is twenty minutes east, Brownsville's zoo, battlefields, and SpaceX viewing are fifteen minutes south, and the parks here charge inland prices for all of it.

Los Fresnos is a small highway town, and Highway 100 through the middle of it carries every beach-bound car in Cameron County, so weekends get busy and the through-traffic never really stops. Groceries and the basics are covered in town, but medical care means Brownsville or Harlingen. The Winter Texan park scene here is modest too; you pick Los Fresnos for the refuge, the beach, and the price, not the social calendar.
