Mercedes, Texas

Mercedes is the Queen City of the Valley, home of the Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show since 1940 and the outlet mall the whole region drives to, with golf-course resorts on its south side that anchor a lot of returning seasons.

The Season in Mercedes

The Rio Grande Valley Premium Outlets at the Mercedes exit are the biggest retail draw in the Mid-Valley, which means the one town where the shopping comes to you instead of the other way around. South of the expressway, the resorts along FM 1015 are the other anchor: Llano Grande and its neighbors run the full activity calendar, and the golf courses down there stay busy all winter with league play.

The Rio Grande Valley Livestock Show in March is the event Mercedes is known for, a real stock show with rodeo nights that has run since 1940. Weslaco sits next door, Estero Llano Grande State Park's boardwalks are ten minutes away, and the Progreso bridge is a fifteen-minute run south for the dental-and-lunch trip.

What to Know Before You Book

Two things worth knowing. The stock show lands in mid-March, after some folks have already pulled out for the trip north, so plan your departure around it if it's on your list. And outside the outlets, Mercedes itself is a modest farm town: the hospital run and most errands mean Weslaco or Harlingen, each about fifteen to twenty-five minutes out.
