The Season in Harlingen
Valley International Airport is the practical reason to winter here. Southwest and other carriers fly direct routes that make the trip down cheaper and simpler, for you and for visiting family, than connecting through anywhere. The town itself holds up its end. The Jackson Street district downtown is the Valley's best antique crawl, and the Iwo Jima Memorial at the Marine Military Academy is worth the visit whether or not you served; it's the original working model the Arlington bronze was cast from.
Birders get Hugh Ramsey Nature Park and the Harlingen Thicket on the east side, and the town sits at the junction of I-69E and I-2, so South Padre Island, Brownsville, and the Mid-Valley are each about thirty minutes out.
What to Know Before You Book
Harlingen's Winter Texan scene is a notch quieter than Mission's or Donna's: plenty of parks, but fewer of the mega-resorts with nightly entertainment. If your season revolves around the park calendar, tour the Mid-Valley first. If it revolves around the airport, the beach, and your own schedule, Harlingen is hard to beat.
