Rio Grande City, Texas
Rio Grande City is the Starr County seat and one of the oldest towns on the river: Fort Ringgold, the 1899 La Borde House, and a working border-town downtown an hour west of the Valley's crowds.
The Season in Rio Grande City
This is the historic Valley. Fort Ringgold, established in 1848 after the Mexican-American War, still stands on the east side of town; Robert E. Lee was posted here. Downtown's La Borde House is a French-designed 1899 hotel you can still walk into, and the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto, a 1920s replica of the French shrine, sits above the town. None of it is dressed up for tourists, which is exactly the appeal.
Practically, Rio Grande City is the supply town for western Starr County, with real grocery stores, a hospital, and highway access on US 83, plus Falcon Lake thirty minutes upriver and McAllen about an hour east.
What to Know Before You Book
The Winter Texan infrastructure here is thin: a handful of small parks, no resort activity calendars, and the nearest big park scene is an hour away in the Mission–McAllen corridor. Winters here suit self-directed people: anglers working Falcon Lake, history readers, and couples who want the border town without the traffic.
