Alamo, Texas

Alamo calls itself the Refuge to the Valley. Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge is on its doorstep, and the stretch of parks between Alamo and Donna is one of the densest Winter Texan corridors in Texas.

The Season in Alamo

Santa Ana is the reason birders know Alamo: 2,000 acres of old-growth thorn forest on a bend of the Rio Grande, with a winter tram, twelve miles of trails, and species like hook-billed kites and elf owls that draw people from every state your neighbors' license plates come from. It's ten minutes from most Alamo parks.

The parks themselves line Alamo Road and the Business 83 corridor, and the season's rhythm here is the classic one: park dances, jam sessions, the Don-Wes Flea Market a few miles east, and the Progreso bridge fifteen minutes south when it's time for a dental appointment and lunch in Nuevo Progreso. McAllen's hospitals and mall are twenty minutes west.

What to Know Before You Book

Alamo is a park town more than a destination town. Outside the resorts and the refuge, the shopping and restaurants are basic, and you'll drive to McAllen or Weslaco regularly. Nobody winters in Alamo for downtown. They winter here because the parks are good, the rent is fair, and everything the Upper Valley offers is inside a twenty-minute radius.
