Original Medicare travels with you anywhere in the U.S., and the McAllen and Harlingen medical corridors have the specialists and hospitals to use it. Medicare Advantage is the catch: many plans are network-based back home, and out-of-area coverage can be limited to emergencies. Check your plan's rules before the season, not from a waiting room.
Bring a current medication list and copies of recent records, and line up a Valley primary care clinic early in your stay rather than after something goes wrong. Winter clinics book up in January and February like everything else here.

How do I fill my prescriptions for the winter?
Transfer them to a Valley location of your chain pharmacy, or ask your home doctor for a vacation supply before you leave. Controlled medications have stricter transfer rules, so sort those out before the season.
